Structure of Luke 4:16-30
A Now He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up (16a)
B
and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was His custom. He stood up
to read, (16b)
C and the small
scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found
the place where it was written, The SPIRIT of YAHWEH is on Me, Because
He did anoint Me; To proclaim the
evangel to the poor, Apostolizes Me to proclaim to captives liberation, and
recovering of sight to the blind, to apostolize the crushed with deliverance,
To proclaim an acceptable year of YAHWEH.
And rolling up the small scroll, He returned it to the attendant, and
sat down--to speak. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And
He began to say to them, Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your
hearing. (17-21)
D All the people
began to speak well of Him and to wonder at the gracious words that flowed from
his mouth. They said, Is this not Joseph's son? (22)
E And He said to
them, Undoubtedly you will speak this parable to Me, Physician, heal yourself.
Do everything here in Your hometown that we hear You did in Capernaum. (23)
D He
added, Amen I say unto all of you with certainty, a prophet is not accepted in
his hometown. (24)
C But I tell you
in truth that there was many a widow in Israel in the time of Elijah, when
there was no rain for 3½ years and there came a severe famine over all the
land; yet Elijah was not sent to any one of them, but only to a widow in
Sarepta in Sidon. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of
Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.
(25-27)
B
When they had heard these words, those in the synagogue were filled with fury; And
rising up, they threw Him outside the city, and led Him up to the brow of the
hillside on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down. (28-29)
A
But He passed through the crowd and went on His way. (30)
It will be noted that in “A” He comes to Nazareth, and in the parallel He goes His way. In “B” He enters the synagogue to read, and in the parallel those in the synagogue drive Him from the synagogue and seek to hurl Him over a cliff. In “C” He proclaims His ministry as the anointed Prophet, and what the consequences are going to be, and in the parallel He describes the consequences of ELOHIM’s previous activity through His prophets. In “D” they begin to express doubt because He is Joseph’s son and in the parallel he points out that a prophet is not honored in his own country. In “E”, central to their problem is that He is not doing in Nazareth what He has been doing in Capernaum.
