 Faith Alliance Church

history of FAith Alliance church

On December 15, 1976 thirty-seven members of the Durham Alliance Church accepted the challenge of establishing a second Christian & Missionary Alliance church in northern Durham county. Under the leadership of Rev. Ronald Mayers and assistant pastor Rev. Art Joyce, these families began meeting at the Edison Johnson Recreation Center while searching for land on which to build. We met at the recreation center for 153 weeks while a search committee, led by Miss Jessie Joyner, tirelessly sought out the perfect location for our new church.

On November 15, 1978, property on Umstead Road was purchased. Building plans, drawn by architect Dennis Nicholson, were approved in December 1978. Contracts were let in June 1979 to Crabtree Associates for construction of a sanctuary and education building. On December 16, 1979, six weeks ahead of schedule, we held our first service in the new sanctuary. In September 1982 construction of a second education building was begun. This building was dedicated in January 1984. Almost all work on the second education building was done by the men of the church. In April 1984 work was begun on expanding the sanctuary. This work was completed in September 1986, again with the work being done by the men of the church.

In July 1990 Rev. Mayers left Faith Alliance Church to follow God’s leading to other ministry opportunities. On March 3, 1991 Rev. Nathan Penland accepted our call to become the second pastor of Faith Alliance. Rev. Penland left on August 18, 1996 to become pastor of Grace Bible Alliance Church in Lexington, SC. On February 16, 1997 the Search Committee met with Rev. David G. Anderson and his wife Teresa and on February 23, 1997 a call was extended to Rev. Anderson. Rev. Anderson began his ministry at Faith Alliance Church on May 04, 1997.

During 2005 Mr. Jerry Casto, former member of Faith Alliance Church, completed his studies and graduated from Southeastern University. Upon graduation Jerry and his wife Linda returned to Faith Alliance Church where Jerry joined the staff as Pastor of Outreach and Evangelism. In January 2007 Jerry left Faith Alliance and, along with Rev. Norm Davis, took on the challenge of planting a new C&MA church in the Brier Creek area. We miss Jerry and Linda’s leadership, but we know that this is where God is directing them.

Following the Morning Worship Service on December 30, 2007 Rev. Anderson read his letter of resignation, effective January 15, 2008, to the congregation at Faith Alliance Church. He told us that he felt led by God to pursue a different avenue of ministry. He explained that this was a very difficult decision for him to make but he felt complete peace about this decision. It is with heavy hearts that we wish Rev. Anderson and his family joy, peace and happiness and our prayer is that God will continue to use Rev. Anderson to reach those who do not have a personal relationship with Christ.

On May 3, 2008 Rev. Tim Williamson interviewed for the position of Pastor at Faith Alliance. After meeting with the Board of Elders and the Governing Board and speaking in the Morning Worship Service on May 4, 2008 the decision was made on May 12, 2008 to offer the position to Rev. Williamson. He immediately accepted our offer and began his ministry at Faith Alliance on June 1, 2008. We praise God for answering our prayers and sending us His choice for us.

Through the years we have experienced many challenges at Faith Alliance Church but with each challenge we have encountered, we became stronger in our faith. We invite you to become a part of our church today and a piece of its history tomorrow.

Please feel free to call the church office or stop by for a visit. We invite you to come and worship with us as we continue to “Experience God’s Grace and Demonstrate His Love”.
