BE EDGY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Janel Evans of Cheyenne, Wyoming, is an edgy teenager. She was about to turn seventeen and she wanted to do something memorable to celebrate her big day. She was bored with the typical birthday party festivities, so she asked her parents to just give her the cash they would have spent on a party and presents for her. Pretty self-centered, huh? Until you learn that she took her birthday money and spent it all on food to donate to the homeless shelter near her home. Her birthday celebration consisted of spending time with her family as they prepared 135 lunches, and then distributed the meals to individuals at the shelter. This is a time of year when others need a few more things, and a little more help. I decided this would be much more rewarding than just having a party for myself Janel reflected.

As we stand on the edge of the holiday season, I hope each of us also looks around and notices others who may need a few more things or a little more help. Perhaps we should admit that we can celebrate the holidays with a little less stuff for ourselves, and a little more edge for others. Often times, all it takes to create a new opening is a new utilization of our existing resources, skills and time. Why not try an experiment this holiday season: start each day with the expectation that God is going to place someone in your path who needs a word of encouragement or an act of kindness from you and then be on the look-out to identify that person and respond to them. Life lived on the edge, is a life lived with more than words its a life lived with actions.

Supt. Darrel Riley

The Art of Thanksgiving

by Wilfred A. Peterson

The art of thanksgiving is thanksliving. It is gratitude in action . . .

It is thanking God for the gift of life, by living it triumphantly

It is thanking God for your talents & abilities, by accepting them as opportunities to

invest for the good of others.

It is thanking God for all that others have done for you, by doing things for others.

It is thanking God for happiness, by striving to make others happy.

It is thanking God for beauty, by helping to make the world more beautiful.

It is thanking God for inspiration, by trying to be an inspiration to others.

It is thanking God for each new day, by living it to the fullest.

It is thanking God for health and strength, by using your hands, arms, legs and voice to

personify Jesus.

It is adding to your prayers of thanksgiving, actions of thanksliving.

IRAQI CHURCH focus on NOV. 8

Sunday, November 8 is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. This years focus is upon the persecuted, yet growing, FMC in Iraq. Political and military intervention can do only so much. The Prince of Peace is the ultimate answer to the needs of the Iraqi people. Each church has received a packet of resources to lead your people in praying for, offering encouragement to and investing financially in the Iraqi FMC. Call 800.342.5531 or email ericay@fmcna.org if you have further questions.

OVERFLOW 2010

Doubletree Hotel, entrance of Universal Studios: 5780 Major Blvd. Orlando, FL 32819 PH: 407-206-7059

The OVERFLOW Conference will take place April 22 24, 2010 in Orlando FL. All conferences along the East Coast will gather with our 3 bishops to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our denomination, and to chart the course into the future. Register by November 15 at www.overflowconference.net for a $50 savings at the Super Early Bird Rate. Cost options are available with hotel lodging, as a commuter, or as a one-day participant.

As Overflow will include Friday afternoon Annual Conference sessions, each church should at least send their pastor and delegate. However, since this mega-meeting is in our own backyard, we challenge each church to bring a van or bus full of attendees. As all SER Pastors & Spouses retreats were cancelled this year in light of Overflow, churches are encouraged to use their retreat funds to pay Overflow fees for their clergy.
