LEADERSHIP UPDATE of the Southeast Region

Volume 5, Issue 9 October 2010

Pastors: Please distribute this to your delegates, leaders & congregation

NEW GROUPS THIS FALL

Group Life no, its not about a program . . . its about people. Groups can take place in any location, and in sizes from two or three, to a dozen or more.

Some smaller groups may be initiated by church members outside the walls of your church:

  • Inviting a few co-workers to join you for a weekly lunchtime discussion about lifes difficulties and the Bibles guidance.
  • An empty nest mom meeting with a couple of young mothers to encourage them in their marriages and parenting.

Some medium sized groups may be led by church members inside the walls of the church:

  • Leading an ESL (English as Second Language) class for the community
  • Organizing a Celebrate Recovery group for those desiring a better future

It doesnt matter the size of the group or the location of where it takes place. . . what matters is that those in your congregation are reaching out to others in friendship, offering the compassion and wisdom of Christ. So ask your church attendees to turn in what they are doing to invest in others through group life. Then report your congregations new groups by October 10 (10-10-10) to Bishop Roller at www.livethestorytellthestory.com.

HELPS FOR GROUP LIFE

If you have internet access, you can receive free tips and ongoing guidance for group life simply by signing up:

  • Christianity Today offers a small group newsletter called Building Small Groups. To subscribe, go to www.smallgroups.com. In addition to the weekly bundle of articles by theme that are offered for a small fee, there are always 2 3 free articles to enhance or problem-solve your small group experience.

  • Christian Today has also just rolled out the first edition of a totally on-line digital magazine for group life, called Small Groups Digizine. John Ortberg and other ministry leaders provide articles quarterly. Access through the link on the homepage of www.smallgroups.com, or type in Small Groups Digizine on your browser.

USE MEDIA FOR GROUP LIFE

Everyone enjoys a good movie, and this fall theres a great movie coming to the big screen that can be used for Kingdom purposes. In November, 20th Century Fox will release I AM, a contemporary film based upon the 10 Commandments, which was written, directed, produced and financed by individuals with a passion for God and a heart for the church.

Go to www.IAMthemovie.com for trailers, downloadable materials and info.

Im a huge fan of the movie I AM. I love how relevant it is for right now, and I love the whole look and feel of it; think of 24 and Crash. After people see it, theyre going to have to talk about it with somebody and pastors and churches better be prepared, or theyre going to miss an awesome opportunity to connect with the unchurched they claim they are so desperately trying to reach. (Frank Pastore, KKLA Radio Host and author of Shattered)

October is PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH

Expressing appreciation to your pastor and his/her family can take many forms.

Here are just 5 actions that are appropriate any time of the year:

Pray daily for your pastor & spouse, that their love for one another and God deepens.

Respect your pastors evenings by not calling him/her at home after 7pm.

Baked items, restaurant gift cards, and offers to babysit are also thoughtful gifts.

Share words of appreciation with greater eagerness than words of constructive criticism.

Remember, PKs (preachers kids) are forming their view of the Church based, in part, upon how they feel the congregation is treating their parents.

Potential ATS Orlando Seminary Students

Preview Weekend will be held at the Asbury Orlando campus Oct 15 - 16 for those considering a call to seminary. Meet with faculty, academic advisors and students. Join in worship, share meals and attend class. The event is free, and Asbury will reimburse up to $50 of hotel costs for long distance travelers.
