40 DAYS OF PRAYER & PREPARATION

This is a significant season in the lives of our people, our churches and our nation. In recent weeks and months there have been many challenges. Some have experienced employment cut-backs or loss of significant income. . Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike have caused disruption and often great devastation to countless individuals, businesses and communities. . . . And in the midst of these economic and atmospheric pressures, we as a nation are on the brink of an upcoming presidential election.

Ive heard reports that in the 2000 USA census, there were 60,000,000 persons who identified themselves as Christians (the total population of our nation is 300,000,000). We all realize that a persons self-identification as a Christian may or may not reflect a Biblical understanding of one who claims Christ as Savior and is walking daily as a disciple of Jesus, but nevertheless, this is a huge group of people. As 1/5 of the American public, Christians are our nations largest single minority.

In the coming days there will be presidential debates aired on television, newspaper analysis of the candidates views, and a myriad of other media venues to help you become an informed voter in preparation for casting your vote on November 4. But please make the Lord your PRIMARY source to which you turn for guidance:

Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His. He changes times and seasons; He sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him. Daniel 2:20 22

What a wonderful opportunity and responsibility - believers have as individuals, as small groups, as congregations, and in larger faith-based gatherings, to unite in prayer for our nation, its people, and all presidential candidates. There are many Christian organizations which are providing free non-partisan resources to encourage believers to take seriously the 40 days prior to the election as a time for prayer and preparation. One of those organizations which I encourage all pastors and congregations to utilize is The Presidential Prayer Team, which was formed in September 2001 as a intercessory prayer support for our nations top leaders. They recently created a 40 Days to Pray the Vote daily devotional which offers a Scripture and guided prayer in the 40 day countdown to election day. Find this and their other resources at www.presidentialprayerteam.org

Ill conclude with a prayer provided in one of the 40 Days to Pray the Vote devotionals:

Awesome God, all things are in Your hands times and seasons, wisdom and knowledge, things hidden and things revealed You hold them all! Only You are worthy of the praise of our lips, yet we give our praise so readily to those who do not deserve it. O God, Your will is perfect and supreme over all things. I ask You to raise up the president of Your choosing this year. Work in special needful ways to bring about Your purposes for our country, Lord, and work especially through the president to accomplish that will. You have been so faithful and true to us, God. May Your will continue to be revealed to us through those who are elected this year.

In Your Holy name. Amen

Supt Darrel Riley
