LOCK
DOWN
Last week I made a quick trip to
Sams Club to see if it carried a needed office supply. No luck. I quickly darted
for the exit door and saw a long line waiting to have their receipts checked.
No problem I hadnt bought anything - so I walked around the line and made my
way for the door. I was abruptly stopped. The doors had been electronically
locked. I shot a questioning look at the employee. Were on lock-down; a childs missing.
It was amazing how those few words
immediately changed my perspective, and that of the 20
or so other customers lined up with their carts full of merchandise. A childs missing. With those words,
faces of irritation turned to expressions of concern for the worried family,
and I heard comments such as Hey, take
as long as you need, and Dear Lord,
help that poor child. After four or five minutes, the door guard got the
signal on her walkie talkie All clear - the child had
been located within the store. The glass doors released. Everyone walked smiling
from the building, realizing a tragedy had been averted.
In preparation for the fall
kick-off at your church, I hope that your leadership has set aside time to pray
and listen for Gods alerts Theres a
lonely teenager next door . . . an out
of work parent in your neighborhood. . . a
depressed adult in your congregation . Are you looking at your community,
as well as your congregation, with Gods eyes and heart? Have you gone into a
programming Lock Down to do some investigation and make sure that this coming
year youll be focusing your energies, talents, finances and time on ministries
that will more effectively reach out to Gods cherished missing the least,
the last and the lost? Dont fall into the rut of repeating programs youve
always done. The world has changed since last year there are new needs, as
well as wonderful new resources and opportunities to help you be more effective
as the people of God. Risk the untried.
You
cant have a better tomorrow, if you are reliving yesterday all the time.
