REFLECTIONS on a REUNION

Recently Peggy and I made our annual summer trek north. Time was spent visiting our sons and Peggys side of the family in Indianapolis, and then it was on to Nashville TN for the annual Riley reunion. Although we make it to Indy fairly often, the gathering in Nashville is definitely just a once-a-year event. Relatives fly and drive in from as far away as Fairbanks AK, Seattle WA, and Dallas TX. Certainly the cost of transportation and lodging could be spent on more exotic vacation trips like cruises or beach condos or mountain cabins, but instead the Riley clan has chosen to meet in the middle of the nation to invest in renewing our bonds with one another. Its not a glamorous schedule: Day 1 is golfing or antiquing, concluding with taking over a shopping mall food court for dinner. Day 2 is gathering at a rented church fellowship hall for a mid-morning through late evening day of eating, talking, picture taking, and games Wii for the more active and board games for others. And Day 3 is Sunday worship together before going our separate ways.

This years gathering was especially interesting because of a special presentation of our roots as the Rileys . . . or more accurately . . . the ORiley clan. It began with distributing a folder to each family, which included a family tree diagram & photocopies of old pictures of our ancestors. A retired uncle had spent the past year amassing information from internet searches, phone calls, etc. to piece together a narrative of our family and to introduce us to distance relatives. This was followed by a special panel discussion where all the senior members of the family sat together and they were asked questions by younger generations about what life was like when they were growing up toys they played with, chores they did, difficult events they faced, and decisions they were proud of. As stories unfolded, we began to see grandma and Aunt Shirley and Uncle Dennis as real people, not just relatives, and we gained respect for their lives and learned from their wisdom.

In many ways, General Conference 2011 next July will be a gigantic family reunion, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the FMC. Yes, there will be extra expense and inconvenience to go to New York, but it will be worth the investment. It will be a sacred time of re-tracing our heritage, bonding with distant relatives, and asking questions which will equip us to better meet the ministry challenges and opportunities of todays world.

In preparation for this historic gathering, get involved in the following ways:
