MORE THAN BACKPACKS and BUSSES

Its that time of year and area merchants are ready. Discount store shelves are brimming with everything from crayons and glue to notebooks and binders. Retailers have also ordered additional quantities of shoes and clothing in anticipation of high demand.

What about your local church what preparations are you making for a new school year of ministry to those within your congregation and out in your local community? Ive asked my wife Peggy to provide a listing of some simple ministry ideas for capitalizing on this pivotal time of year. Browse the ideas below and creatively touch your local community.

BACK TO SCHOOL IDEAS:

Host a free Back to School Carnival for local community families with children. As a last blast before school starts, provide free snack foods & carnival games for families, and possibly rent an inflatable bounce house. Use this hook event to distribute a flier about your upcoming fall childrens, youth and adult events and programs.

Hold a special Back to School Dedication Sunday. Invite public school teachers, bus drivers & other workers to a breakfast reception, then have a special time of dedication for them in morning worship. Possibly use the morning sermon to uplift the value of mentoring relationships. Build upon this tradition annually, so that no one feels ready to begin the new school year without the prayer covering of your congregation.

Organize a School Supply Service Project, collecting back packs and school supplies for needy families within your congregation, local community, or nearby school.

If you have a dentist in your congregation, offer free dental checks for children at your church one Saturday, in compliance with public school requirements.

Promote See You At the Pole (www.syatp.com), to take place Wednesday, Sept 24.

SPECIAL SCHOOL YEAR MINISTRIES:

Adopt A School: take in occasional treats to bless the teachers, and also partner with school administrators by providing funding for prescreened children who need eye glasses, dental appointments, head lice medication, etc.

If your church is lucky enough to be located near a school, offer your facility to be used by teachers for a monthly or weekly early prayer service, or provide an after-school program for latch-key children a couple days a week (Tuesdays & Thursdays).

Become a host site for MOMS IN TOUCH INTL., a non-denominational ministry where concerned women gather weekly to pray for one hour for local school administrators, teachers & students (www.momsintouch.org or call 1-800-949-MOMS)

Become a MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS (MOPS) site, ministering to young moms & their preschoolers (www.MOPS.org or call 1-800-929-1287).

The ministry possibilities are endless; ask the Spirit to illuminate your thinking!

Im a little pencil in the hand of a writing God,

who desires to send out love letters to a hurting world. (Mother Teresa)
