General Conference: July 13 17, 2011

Its not BUSINESS AS USUAL!

General Conference 2011 will celebrate our 150th anniversary as a denomination. Our founder, B. T. Roberts, never intended to form a new church; rather, he simply insisted that we wholeheartedly follow Christ whatever the cost and wherever it led. That original vision and challenge remains unchanged today. As a denomination we now stand at a historic crossroads, desiring to hear a fresh word from the Holy Spirit. We commit that we will joyfully follow the Spirits leading whatever the cost, and wherever it leads.

There will be some new aspects to this conference. A few outside the denomination leaders including Richard E. Stearns, president of World Vision, will speak at General Conference to broaden our view of how God is working around the globe. Believing that God will speak to us individually and collectively, a large portion of time is being set aside at General Conference for the purpose of listening, discussing and discerning together. All attendees not just elected delegates - will be organized into one of four ministry groups. These groups will each focus upon a specific aspect of ministry in the 21st century:

EVERY PERSON Ministry how each person might more deeply experience life transformation and become a vibrant witness to others within their personal sphere of influence.

EVERY CHURCH Ministry how each congregation might more fully become a place of healing and wholeness, and exist for the purpose of being a missionary outpost to their community and beyond.

EVERY MEANS Ministry how individuals and groups and congregations might dare to be more creative and innovative, trying new things to reach others, and discarding methods which are no longer effective.

EVERY PLACE Ministry how to become sensitized to unique opportunities for ministry in our immediate neighborhoods, a little further away, and globally.

From these four ministry groups will come plans and recommendations to the presented to the entire general conference.

For the past 180 days, our Bishops have called us to pray and fast that we might clearly and unitedly discern what the Holy Spirit is saying to the FMC at this historic juncture. If at all possible, make plans to come to New York to participate in this gathering. If you must remain at home, the www.gc11.org website will live-stream the main addresses.

Lets each pray, asking God to launch our denomination into a season of mission together that will be our most faithful and fruitful yet.

Supt. Darrel Riley
