MORE LIGHT

Im more than ready for a little more daylight in my life; how about you? Sunset by 5:30pm during the winter months always tempts me to stay inside in the evening and adopt a sedentary lifestyle. But on Saturday night, March 7, well solve that well simply move our clocks forward one hour when going to bed, and awaken Sunday to a sunnier day.

I wish we could increase the amount of light in other aspects of life as simply as re-setting a clock. But being distributors of Gods light in this world takes more intentionality and effort than that. As individuals and as congregations, we need to constantly resist the temptation to hunker down and become sedentary believers who venture out only to attend church services. To be true followers of Jesus, we need to follow Christs example, and move into the neighborhood (John 1:14; Rev 21:3), intentionally looking for those places and people who are in need. When we respond to needs by taking a risk by offering God our resources, life experiences, and availability - we release Christs light, as we beam help, hope, and healing to those who are experiencing frustration and fear. Here are a few diverse examples of ways we have already, or can start, sharing more light:

Our Super Salad Bowl Sunday emphasis on February 1 focused some much needed light . . . and dollars . . . on Haiti to chase away the darkness of hunger following the flooding of last fall. To date 8 churches in the southeast region have reported their contributions, totaling $8,750.19. Undoubtedly there have been many more contributions given, just not reported. Everything from a special offering, to free-will donations at an after church salad luncheon, to a community wide pig roast have been reported.

The Ocala: Bread of Life congregation is in the midst of a special Lenten emphasis. Attendees have been challenged to take a daily Prayer Walk, to pray for and get to know their neighbors, as they develop a healthy pattern of daily exercise. Week 1 they walked and prayed for 10 minutes daily, Week 2 they are to walk and pray for 20 minutes daily, Week 3 for 30 minutes daily, and Week 4 for 40 minutes daily. They are building spiritual and also physical muscle as they build bridges with their neighbors.

As the financial recession continues, provide practical helps for both those in your congregation as well as in the community around you. Three key articles are attached to this newsletter, providing you with guidance on how your church can be a bright light to others during dim financial times. (Thanks Pastor Rex Bullock for uplifting these articles)

I challenge you to participate, with other FM congregations, in World Water Day, March 22, through the Clear Blue Global Water Project. It all began when one FM church in Ohio decided to shed some light by drilling a well for a village in Malawi, Africa. Each church has been mailed a DVD complete with video, photo gallery, sermon resources, and 16 creative suggestions tor raising awareness and funds for drilling bore hole wells on FM church sites so that both clean water access and a means to daily witness about the One who is Living Water are possible.

Supt/ Darrel Riley

. . . I have made you a light for the nations,

that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth. Acts 13:47

INWARDLY HEALTHY & OUTWARDLY FOCUSED:

MISSIONAL RESOURCES & OPPORTUNITIES

THE NEXT PHASE IN PASS CHRISTIAN, MS

In the past 3.5 years since Hurricane Katrina brought devastation to the MS Gulf Coast shore, the FM focus has been upon relief and recovery from a base in Pass Christian. First Lewis Bunn, then Greg Nitchman led the clean up and rebuilding effort. Now a new day has come as the emphasis in Pass Christian shifts toward strengthening the Word of Hope FM Church Plant, under the leadership of Pastor Tommy & Mickie Gammill.

The Nitchmans will relocate to Fayetteville, GA in May, to pastor the Fayette Community Church and see how God develops Phase 2 of Hands of Hope a week-long Extreme Church Makeover experience possible in any town in the USA where a church wants to reach out into its community through construction & a compassionate witness.

Prayer and financial support for church planters Pastor Tommy & Mickie Gammill during this time of transition are especially critical. Email, phone and contribute to the Gammills at PO Box 125, Pass Christian, MS 39571, (228) 236-4028, tommy@hopenet.ws. Each church in the southeast region should be a tangible partner, sharing in the opportunity to support the Gammills in this strategic work.

100% PARTICIPATION in the ON PURPOSE PROCESS in 2009

Each local church pastor and delegate are to be involved in the year-long On Purpose Process of meeting together regularly to discuss their congregations ministries and to pray together for Godly discernment. This is not an optional exercise all clergy appointed to a local church have signed a covenant agreement stating that they will lead the following process:

Monthly: The pastor and delegate meet to talk and pray, recording their discussion notes and action steps on the Monthly On Purpose Form and keeping it for future reference.

May & September: On these two months, a larger group of church leaders join the pastor and delegate, and together they discuss and pray through the Trimester On Purpose Form, reviewing the previous four months (January April, and May August). Keep a copy of the completed Trimester form for your records, and turn in a copy to your District Leader by the May & September Regional Training Events.

In late November or early December, each churchs largest leadership group gathers for a two-part process: (1) evaluation of the current year, and (2) prayerful discernment for the coming year. Keep a copy of the Annual On Purpose Form for your records, and turn in a copy to your District Leader by the January Regional Training Event.
