WHAT ARE YOU SEEING?

I remember turning on the television January 12 around 8:00pm and hearing the first reports of a 7.1 earthquake that had just rocked Haiti. My thoughts immediately went to Jack & Jeanne. I went to my computer and sent a simple message to them. It read: Jeanne, Ive just heard a report of an earthquake in Haiti. What are you seeing?

During this time of great devastation and loss, may we daily remind each other of what Jeanne Acheson - Munos, Gene Dufour, and Merle West are seeing as they have passed from this temporal life into eternal life. I am drawn to two passages in particular:

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. (Revelation 21:3 4)

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and His servants will serve Him. (Revelation 22:1 3)

Loss, hurt, and disorientation are overwhelming in Haiti right now, but by no means is it contained there. All around us there are people in need. In the coming days, ask yourself the question What am I seeing? Who around me has a need? What practical resource, word of encouragement or act of service can I offer in the name of Jesus?

Nightly news is telling Florida to brace for the influx of displaced Haitians about to enter our hospitals, cities and schools. Certainly additional major cities such as Atlanta will also be receiving Haitian guests. I challenge leaders in each congregation to meet for prayer and to see what you have, assessing how your congregation can contribute to the needs of others.

Six ideas for PRAYING, GIVING and SHARING regarding Haiti:

1.    Show the 3 minute FM videos on Haiti earthquake relief in worship on Sunday morning (they are available for download at www.helphaitiheal.org)

2.    Instruct your congregation how to contribute financially to Haiti:

Online giving: www.helphaitiheal.org

By check: Bishops Famine & Relief Fund, Free Methodist Church of North America,

PO Box 535002, Indianapolis, IN 46253-5002

3.    Participate in the FM Day of Prayer and Fasting for Haiti on Wednesday, January 27

4.    Promote the Super Salad Bowl Sunday, February 7; all donations will go to Haiti

5.    If you have a building be ready to offer shelter, or free up space for a Haitian worship service or possibly transitional classes.

6.    Consider sending a work team to Haiti. Contact the FM VISA Ministry for details: conniek@fmcna.org

From the rubble of destruction, may we rise to offer hope and healing as the Body of Christ.

SUPER SALAD BOWL for HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

on SUPER BOWL SUNDAY:

The rebuilding of Haiti will take our prayers, finances and work teams. On Super Bowl Sunday, February 7, all churches in the Southeast Region are challenged to respond to the devastation in Haiti through a special benefit meal. Organize a Soup or Salad luncheon right after church or at game time, with all donations going to Haiti Earthquake Relief. Promotional PDFs are being sent to each church in 3 sizes: poster size, letter size and bulletin insert size. Run copies and distribute. Talk with area businesses and your local community many are desiring to contribute to Haiti but are looking for a reputable agency through which to give. View the FMC DVD segments available for download at www.helphaitiheal.org. Send in contributions to Indianapolis either online or by check:

ANNUAL REPORTING DUE BY JANUARY 31

Ushering in a new year requires the completing of a few reports by those in church leadership. Pastors and delegates should check this list twice to make sure all forms are turned in by January 31st to the indicated recipient:

q  On Purpose Process: Annual Report

Pastors are to send a copy of their Annual On Purpose Report to their DL or bring it to their January regional or district meeting.

q  Year End Report: 2009 statistics filed electronically with Indianapolis

Each January a statistical review of your church from the year needs to be filed on-line with Indianapolis in preparation for publishing a new Yearbook.

q  Appointments Reports: 2010 Confidential Reports & Benefits Changes

Pastors and delegates need to submit their hopes regarding upcoming pastoral appointments to Supt. Darrel. Additionally, those pastors enrolled in the Pension Program who have a change of status or compensation beginning in 2010, need to complete the Notice of Change of Status or Benefit Form and send it to HR (Human Resources) in Indianapolis by January 31.
