A FRESH START in a NEW YEAR

This Christmas season, Peggy and I visited with family up north, as we joined together around the table and the tree. We indulged in many holiday treats at the dinner table, and we enjoyed the giving and receiving of gifts as we sat around the Christmas tree.

The weeks of Christmas and New Years are nostalgic for me as a minister also - I have many memories as a church planter and pastor . . . . the honoring of families on Christmas Sunday who had had a baby during the past year, special gatherings for college students returning home on school break, the flurry of Christmas Eve services the early family service filled with non-stop action, noise & fun, and the reverent service at midnight marked by candlelight and choir.

But I think the holiday service I treasured most was the come and go New Years Eve communion service. For two hours that evening the sanctuary was lit by luminaries as soft instrumental music played. Families entered and sat in the pews as they followed a simple guide sheet. Then, when they were ready, families would come forward and I would serve them communion. Those desiring additional time with me would kneel at a particular section of the altar. They were the Beatitude believers those individuals and families humbled by difficult life experience or hard-won insight during the year - the newly divorced and widowed, families with job loss, physical and emotional needs, and strained relationships. As we knelt together in prayer, there were moments of confession, cries for strength and increased courage, words of gratitude to the God of all comfort, and requests that they would have the faith to believe in new beginnings in the new year.

My prayer for each pastor, believer and congregation is that as we begin the new year, that we will do so on our knees as well - laying down the burdens and fears of 2009, and asking for a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit for the new year. May we rise to our feet with renewed strength, increased joy and bold creativity to face not only the challenges in our own lives, but to also be joyful followers of Jesus who inspire others to seek the Savior.

Father,

We surrender this past year and give it up to You.

We give You our failures, our regrets, and our disappointments for we have no more use for them.

Now, make us a new people, forgetting what lies behind & pressing on toward that what lies ahead.

We give You all our hopes and dreams for the future,

Purity them by Your Spirit so that our will shall truly reflect Your will for us.

As we stand on the threshold of another year,

Encourage us by our successes of the past

Challenge us by the power of Your Word,

And guide us by the presence of Your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Supt. Darrel Riley

In 2010 may we be

INWARDLY HEALTHY, OUTWARDLY FOCUSED congregations

comprised of FILLED AND SPILLED believers

who work in unity to RIP THE ROOF and get others to Jesus.
